Venerdì 14 giugno 2024, dalle ore 19:00 alle 21:00, L’Ascensore è lieta di invitarvi all’inaugurazione di Tableaux Vivants (You’re Gonna Miss Us When We’re Gone), la prima mostra personale in Italia di David Brooks.
Nel titolo e nella struttura, il progetto di David Brooks trae ispirazione dal tableau vivant, una forma d’arte teatrale popolare del XIX secolo. Nel tableau vivant, gli attori rimangono perfettamente immobili, rappresentando scene storiche o mitologiche. Tuttavia, in questo caso, gli attori immobili nelle scene non sono umani, ma animali non nati in Sicilia, come pitoni, draghi barbuti e suricati.
Ben visibili nelle fotografie che ritraggono scene domestiche allestite presso gli spazi de L’Ascensore, ma assenti nelle scene domestiche ritratte, gli attori di questi tableaux vivants sembrano essere scomparsi – un cenno poetico alle conseguenze emotive di ciò che è definito “estinzione anonima”.
L’estinzione anonima, o “estinzione oscura”, si riferisce alla scomparsa di specie sconosciute, mai scoperte dall’uomo e quindi mai protette. La realtà psicologica di tale fenomeno rimane tanto spettrale quanto una performance di tableau vivant, anche se la sua realtà ecologica è sempre presente fuori dalla scena, appena oltre la nostra vista.
Biografia
David Brooks (Indiana, 1975). Vive e lavora a New York, Stati Uniti d’America.
Il suo lavoro esplora come le questioni culturali non possano essere separate dal mondo naturale, mettendo in discussione i termini con cui la natura è percepita e utilizzata.
Ha realizzato progetti importanti presso l’Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum; Storm King; MoMA/PS1; Tang Museum; deCordova Museum; Nouveau Musée National de Monaco; Galerie für Landschaftskunst, Amburgo; Crystal Bridges; Sculpture Center. Nel 2011 ha presentato Desert Rooftops a Times Square, un’opera di land art commissionata dall’Art Production Fund; nel 2018 una grande installazione geologica su Governors Island; e nel 2020 ha ricevuto il Rome Prize presso l’American Academy a Roma.

Friday, June 14, 2024, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, L’Ascensore is pleased to invite you to the opening of Tableaux Vivants (You’re Gonna Miss Us When We’re Gone),the first solo exhibition in Italy by David Brooks.
The title and the format of the project borrows from the theatrical artform popularized in the early 19th Century: the tableau vivant. The tableau vivant entails posed actors remaining perfectly motionless depicting a historical or mythological scene. For this project, however, the motionless actors in the scenes are not of humans but of non-native animals to the environs of Sicily, e.g. pythons, bearded dragons and meerkats.
Clearly visible within the photographs of the domestic scenes composed throughout the gallery, but not in the domestic scenes themselves, the actors within these tableaux vivants appear to have vanished–poetically nodding to the sentimental consequence of what is termed “anonymous extinction”.
The phenomenon known as anonymous extinction, or “dark extinction” is the extinction of undiscovered species that humans never even knew existed, let alone had a chance to protect. The psychological reality of such a phenomenon remains as spectral as a tableau vivant performance, even though its ecological reality is ever present off stage, just out of sight.

David Brooks’work investigates how cultural concerns cannot be divorced from the natural world, while questioning the terms under which nature is perceived and utilized.
He has had major projects at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum; Storm King; MoMA/PS1; Tang Museum; deCordova Museum; Nouveau Musée National de Monaco; Galerie für Landschaftskunst, Hamburg; Crystal Bridges; and the Sculpture Center. In 2011 Brooks had Desert Rooftops in Times Square, an earthwork commissioned by Art Production Fund; in 2018 a large-scale geologic installation on Governors Island, and is a recipient of the 2020 Rome Prize.
