OPEN CALL UNPUBLISHED PHOTO 2024
Entries for the 2024 edition of the international UNPUBLISHED PHOTO contest have just opened. Young photographers born between 1994 and 2006 have the chance until April 15th to submit their portfolios.
The contest is promoted by the Fondazione culture e musei and MUSEC Lugano, in collaboration with the 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery in Milan and the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in Venice.
Unpublished Photo is a global open call that embraces, new, young, and emerging contemporary photographers, aged between 18 and 30.
UP is now in its fifth edition and the competition continues to attract a growing number of young artists from all over the world every year. The initiative was first launched by the Milanese gallery 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS, and then taken forward by MUSEC in Lugano, in 2020 with the aim of strengthening cross-border collaborations and showing continual support of young artists’ work.
One of the 2023’s Unpublished Photo open call winners, W.VV.VV – a 29-year-old, non-binary digital artist and photographer showed their photo series in the public exhibition at Musec. Entitled “Psytopia,” it is an exploration of fantastical landscapes through pastel pink photography and AR filters that aims to spark profound reflections on existence and societal transformation.
W.VV.VV’s artistic odyssey is as compelling as it is visionary. In “Psytopia,” W.VV.VV meticulously documents nocturnal urban scenes across Japanese cities, from Tokyo to Hiroshima, immersing themselves in countless nights and dawns. Their keen eye for detail and unique perspective evokes a poignant sense of solitude amidst bustling urban life. Each image serves as a gateway to a psychological realm, prompting viewers to embark on a journey of introspection.
Beyond their photographic prowess, W.VV.VV has delved into the world of augmented reality (AR) filters, unveiling captivating creations on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. Their filters, including the viral “Invisible” filter, have garnered a staggering 8 billion views to date, cementing their status as a trailblazer in contemporary art.
A public exhibition for UP24 will also be staged of the winner’s works at MUSEC in Lugano, between the 31st October 2024 to 2nd March 2025. A series of collateral events dedicated to photography enthusiasts will be organised to complement the exhibition.
