La Fusion Art Gallery – Inaudita presenta la mostra Climax Change di Stefania Migliorati recentemente, tra le altre cose, vincitrice Bridge Art Residenza d’Artista 2018.
“Ogni volta che l’uomo è entrato in contatto con un ecosistema, la fauna selvatica, soprattutto gli animali più grandi, è stata ridotta, impoverita se non distrutta. Quello che noi riteniamo oggi, perché ci siamo nati, in molti casi un paesaggio naturale è in realtà più una sorta di desertificazione rispetto a quello che esisteva prima. Questo dimenticare viene chiamato “Shifting Baseline Syndrome”. La mostra prende in esame questi temi considerando le relazioni tra l’uomo, gli animali e l’ambiente.”
L’evento è parte del Festival NEsxT – Independent Art Festival, del circuito COLLA e parteciperà alla Notte delle Arti Contemporanee promossa da ContemporaryArt Torino e Piemonte.

Tra tutti gli artisti che seguo da anni, Stefania Migliorati è la mia croce e delizia. Apparentemente così dissimile scovo continuamente in lei un perfetto opposto relativo. Stento a capirla e ne sono irrimediabilmente attratta, poi invece so senza sapere, sorprendo poiché non brancolo, è la più squisita e misteriosa realizzazione. Capire senza sapere. Sapere di capire. Forse è l’arte. Le parole sono limiti. Il suo lavoro (ciò che poi espone, insomma, il prodotto che arriva dopo le sue millemille concettualizzazioni, studi, ricerche) è la sintesi di un’iperbole intellettuale ed emotiva drastica. Tre volte il giro del mondo da dentro? Lei, nel silenzio della sua schiva e nascostissima presenza, è capace di proporre una rivoluzione? Si. Dichiara in un’intervista: “Chi si sente in diritto di usare lo spazio pubblico? … Cerco di capirlo affrontando il problema dall’altro lato. Non con immagini scioccanti ma attraverso una positività, un’alternativa.”, un’alternativa! Una proposta! Finalmente. Grazie. Nei video del progetto In Plain Sight, scova/si trova accidentalmente in situazioni in cui la struttura del sistema viene destabilizzata a causa della familiarità del soggetto in azione con l’ambiente e lo spazio di cui è un habitué. Stefania mappa i rivoluzionari inconsapevoli (li stana). Gli eroi della resistenza a un’opprimente evoluzione sociale e politica che quotidianamente ci affligge, stronca e stanca.
Tu, pubblico vivrai interminabili momenti di dilatazione. Ogni minuto ripetuto e ripetuto è ripetuto nell’azione. Non come un mantra ma come una malia, un incantesimo subdolo, la perversione che apre il sigillo della comprensione. Ripeti un gesto, torna su te stesso, di più, fino a capire che è ovvio, quest’azione è legittima, possibile, è ok. Che trasformazione! Che forza nella semplicità di un atto ripetuto che da scomodo (o magnifico) diviene “normale”, banale, scontato. Potenza geniale. Costringendo a focalizzare. In silenzio. Niente di più. Certo bisogna star fermi, azionare il dispositivo dell’accoglienza. La tolleranza. Certo, sarai un po’ a disagio ma subito dopo sarai puntellata/o di domande (un regalo di lusso solo per te).
La mostra è un vortice intorno al concetto di “Shifting Baseline Syndrome; ossia, le persone di ogni generazione percepiscono e accettano come “naturale” lo stato degli ecosistemi che hanno in contrato nella loro infanzia” (p 72 Selvaggi). Allora, di fronte ai nostri occhi, coniglioidi in ceramica colonizzano lo spazio, se ne appropriano e ne vorremo adottare almeno uno (trovalo!), materiali e forme bellissime e strane che ci costringono, per forza, a pensare, a ragionare. Niente è ovvio, spazientita/o ti chiederai “Ma perché?”, farai domande, diventerai attore, protagonista, ti sentirai coinvolto. Come me. Lo stupore è la forma eccelsa dell’intuito. I disegni e le fotografie da documento diverranno catalogo, da catalogo lista, da lista a intuizione, da intuizione a coscienza.
Il ruolo di quest’artista, consapevole delle sue dimensioni limitate (non può essere ovunque) è quello di dire comunque che bisogna riflettere. Lo spazio e la legge, la libertà di movimento ed espressione, il pericolo imminente del lasciar fare, lasciar stare, prendersi la vita, rivendicarla. La forza di questo discorso è potenzialmente destabilizzante. Chi parla urlando e chi, semplicemente, dice la verità. Dimostrandola, esplicitandola, è già “Vita Activa”.
La riflessione sull’inversione di rotta tra la relazione dell’uomo e il suo ambiente, la tragicità antropocenica di un’ennesima estinzione di massa attualmente in corso ( e l’autoannientamento?), la capacità di adattamento di alcune specie e la selezione in/naturale di altre, il desiderio del selvaggio, Walden, di fuggire nei boschi e ritornare barbuti ed esperti di vita tettonica, la consapevolezza dei vincoli che c’impongono rinunce e impedimenti, tutto questo ci porterà su Marte, il paradiso perduto, o ci costringerà a scegliere la vita, il quotidiano come dio concreto e presente?

Stefania Migliorati (Bergamo, 1977) vive e lavora fra Bergamo e Berlino. Le sue opere e i suoi progetti sono indagini su temi legati allo spazio e al luogo in molte delle loro declinazioni, con un particolare interesse verso lo spazio pubblico. Fusion Art Gallery – Inaudita presents the solo exhibition Climax Change by Stefania Migliorati.
Each time that humanity has come into contact with an ecosystem, the wildlife population, especially the larger animals, has been reduced, depleted if not outright destroyed. A natural landscape that we take for granted today, because it remains in the same condition we have known from birth, may in fact be a desertification in comparison with what existed before. This type of “forgetting” is referred to as shifting baseline syndrome. The exhibition investigates this topic by examining the interrelationship between human beings, animals and their (shared) habitats.
This event is part of the festival NESXT – Independent Art Festival, as well as the COLLA art community and will participate in the night of contemporary arts promoted by Contemporaryart Torino and Piemonte.

Among all the artists whose work I have been following for years, Stefania Migliorati is my torture and delight. Seemingly dissimilar, I find in her a perfect opposite. I can hardly understand her, yet I am hopelessly attracted to her, but then I know without knowing, I am surprised because I don’t understand; it is the most exquisite and mysterious realization. To understand without knowing. To know to understand. Maybe it’s art. Words are limits. Her work (which she then exhibits, that is, the product that comes after countless studies, research and ruminations) is the synthesis of a drastic intellectual and emotional hyperbole. Three times around the world from the inside? Is she, in the silence of her bashful and hidden presence, capable of proposing a revolution? Yes. She says in an interview: “Who feels they have the right to use public space? … I try to figure it out by looking at the problem from the other side. Not with shocking images but through positivity, an alternative.” An alternative! A suggestion! Finally. Thank you. In the videos of the project In Plain Sight, unearthed, accidentally found, situations where the structure of the system is destabilized due to the familiarity of the subject interacting with the environment and space of which they are habitués. Stefania maps the unwitting revolutionaries (she flushes them out). The heroes of the resistance to an oppressive social and political evolution that affects us daily, nipping at our heels and exhausting us.
You, the visitors, will experience interminable and endless moments of the dilation of time. Each moment, repeated and repeated, is repeated in the action. Not as a mantra but as a charm and a sneaky kind of spell, a perversion that opens the seal of understanding. Repeat a gesture, come back to yourself, repeat, until you understand that it is obvious, the action is legitimate, possible, it’s OK. What a transformation! What a force in the simplicity of a repeated action that transforms from the uncomfortable (or magnificent) to the “normal”, the trivial, the thing taken for granted. Brilliant power. Forcing focus. In silence. Nothing more. Of course, you will have to stop and take the time to see. You will need patience. Sure, you may be a little uncomfortable but soon after you will be full with questions (a special gift just for you).
This exhibition is a vortex formed by the concept of “shifting baseline syndrome; that is, the people of each generation perceive and accept as “natural” the state of the ecosystems they have lived in or seen in their infancy…” (p. 72 Selvaggi, George Monbiot). So, right before our eyes, ceramic rabbits colonize the space, appropriate it and make us want to adopt at least one of them (pick one out!), these are beautiful and strange materials and forms that force us, necessarily, to think, to reason. Nothing is obvious, without patience, you’ll ask yourself “But why?”, you will find yourself asking questions, you will become a protagonist, you will become involved. Like me. Amazement is the exalted form of intuition. The drawings and photographs from a document will become a catalog, a catalog becomes a list, a list an intuition, and ultimately, an intuition becomes conscience.
The role of this artist, aware of her limits (that she cannot physical be everywhere at once) is to say that you must reflect. Space and law, freedom of movement and expression, the imminent danger of letting go, abandoning, taking your own life in your hands, claiming it. The strength of this discourse is potentially destabilizing. Who speaks by screaming and who simply speaks the truth? By demonstrating it, making it explicit, it is already Vita Activa.
The reflection on the reversal of fate between human beings and their environment, the anthropogenic tragedy of yet another mass extinction currently underway (along with self-annihilation?), the ability of some species to adapt and the (un)natural selection of others, the desire for the wilderness, Walden, to flee to the woods and to return bearded and an expert on tectonic life, the awareness of the bonds that impose sacrifices and impediments upon us, all of this will lead to Mars, to Paradise Lost, or will force us to choose life, the daily as a concrete and present god?

Stefania Migliorati (b. 1977, Bergamo, Italy) lives and works between Bergamo and Berlin. Her works and projects are investigations of the topics associated with the concepts of space and location, encompassing many of the different notions of how these terms can be applied, with a specific focus on public space.
