The first exhibition produced by the Estate of Myour Gape, recently founded by Italian artist Clemente Ciarrocca.
Gape’s practice explored fetish as a simultaneously natural & controlled, deeply intimate binding of idea & reality—a particular kind of bondage nourished in the co-extensive desires for total submission and absolute freedom. Dialoguing with Gape’s thinking, Ciarrocca chooses to create an immersive multi sensorial installation that draws the audience into what appears to be a genuine materialization of Myour Gape’s diaries. One question, however, hovers unanswered: who (or what?) is Myour Gape?
“To live under the hegemony of proprieties implies that the only subjectivity granted existence is one intrinsically propertizing, compulsively capitalizing just as it grows in need for the asphyxiated reality wee can’t help but intuit in our deprivation. To express this contrast wherever it cannot be maintained is to undergo a disruption rendering flesh just tender and weak enough to be further enclosed and possessed by desires that, centuries onwards, keep being shaped entirely beyond any notion of personal control-social machinery ultimately blending horror and bliss in actually ‘working’, in being perfectly functional, awe-inspiring technologies. What ‘liberation’ created risks being the ultimate feast.”
